Many thanks to all participants and volunteers!  This year’s Run for Rural Medicine was a success, but would have been nothing at all without your enthusiasm and support!

Unfortunately, due to a last minute course re-routing, the “10km” course was actually 12.1km and the “5km” course just over 6km.

Congratulations to this year’s winners!

6km – men – David Holtzman

6km – women – Sanaz Fotoohi

12km – men – Benjamin Maas

12km – women – Anne-Marie Madden

Race winners of each event have been awarded Running Room gift certificates, pedometers and USB keys courtesy of the British Columbia Medical Association, and UBC Medicine clothing…

Race winners please email me at edwardgbrooks@gmail.com so I can get your prize packages to you!

Get ready for the 4th annual Run for Rural Medicine with the UBC Medical Class of 2011, now a province-wide event! On Saturday, April 4th at 10 am, join us for a beautiful 5 km or 10 km run or walk through the trails of Pacific Spirit Park at UBC, as we and our classmates in Victoria and Prince George raise money for our UBC Rural Family Medicine Clerkships this summer throughout BC.

As an effort to address the critical shortage of family doctors in rural BC, each second year UBC medical student is paired with a family physician in a rural community, extending as far north as the Yukon.

The training covers a period of 4-6 weeks, and provides medical students with a comprehensive, hands-on experience in rural medicine. The UBC Rural Family Medicine Clerkship exposes students to these underserved communities with the aim of fostering a passion for rural medicine that will help shape career choices in the future. Students are responsible, however, for financing accommodation and associated living expenses while away, and as we can end up in any corner of BC, the potential to incur large relocation costs is very likely. As such, fundraising events are undertaken by medical students, the majority of whom already carry a significant debt load, in an attempt to offset this additional financial burden. The Run for Rural Medicine is sure to be a highlight, and your participation and support will help provide health care services in the underserved rural areas of our province both now and in years to come.

Thank you for your support, and see you at the run.
